FROM ROME TO ORVIETO: A HISTORY SPANNING OVER 2000 YEARS

A full cultural and historical immersion among the must-see places of the capital and its surroundings.
 

DAILY PROGRAM

Day 1: ARRIVAL

Arrival at Rome airport, welcome by our English speaking tour leader and coach transfer to Vatican area. Accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel Villa Pamphili, or similar. Welcome drink. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: ANCIENT ROME

Breakfast at the hotel, and departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided tour of the Ancient Rome, once the metropolis of an empire. The guide will lead you among the monuments that have made the history of the Urbe: the Coliseum, the most emblematic building in Rome, the Roman Forum, the heart of the political life in ancient Rome, and the majestic Arch of Constantine. After that, visit of the Baths of Caracalla, a large complex that includes the ruins of the gymnasiums, changing rooms and swimming pool, then continue to the Capitoline Square, the high place of Rome that sums up all the glory of the capital city. You will visit the Capitoline Museums, where the richest collection of Roman antiquities in the world is exposed, including the most famous works such as the She-wolf suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, and the Capitoline Venus. Finally discovery of the Ancient Appian Way, along which you can admire several ruins and ancient tombs surrounded by the countryside. Free time for lunch during the visit (not included). Back to the hotel in the late afternoon, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: ROME BAROQUE

After breakfast, departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided tour of Baroque Rome. Walk among the most famous monuments: the magnificent Trevi Fountain, a masterpiece of late Roman-Baroque, known worldwide for its ritual consisting in throwing a coin into the water, then the spectacular Piazza di Spagna animated by luxury boutiques and ancestral craftsmen. Then external view of the Pantheon, a prestigious temple dedicated to the Roman deities, and Piazza Navona, a triumph of the Baroque style with its three fountains. Continue to the Church of St. Ignatius, then to Piazza Venezia, with the famous Vittoriano, a white marble monument erected to the glory of Victor-Emmanuel II and Italian unity. Finally, a guided tour of two of Rome's four major basilicas. Discovery of the Basilica of St. Mary Major with its splendid mosaics of the 5th century. Thanks to the great variety of architectural styles, from early Christian to Baroque, the basilica brings together all the stages of Roman Christian art. Then, the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of the city, as well as the first church built in Rome. Inside, the basilica is richly decorated with mosaics, columns and imposing statues. Free time for lunch during the visit (not included). Back to the hotel in the late afternoon, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: VATICAN CITY

Breakfast, and departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided visit of the Christian Rome with the Vatican Museums, a complex of twelve museums that gather one of the most beautiful and huge art collections in the world. The long visit to the museums finally reaches the Sistine Chapel, a true artistic treasure of the Vatican: from its ceiling to the altar wall you can contemplate Michelangelo's famous “Last Judgment". Lunch in a restaurant inside the museums. In the afternoon, visit of the sober and solemn St. Peter’s Square and the magnificent Basilica, which count two thousand years of the history of the Papal Rome. View of the famous dome, Michelangelo's masterpiece, and visit to the Tombs of the Popes. Finally, an external view of the Castel Sant'Angelo, just outside the Vatican on the right bank of the Tiber. Free time in St. Peter's Square, then back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: TIVOLI - FRASCATI

After breakfast, departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, walk in the wonderful gardens of Villa Borghese. Located on the hill of Pincio, Villa Borghese is one of the most beautiful and largest parks in the city, which also hosts museums, a zoo and a small lake. Continue to Tivoli. Free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, guided tour of Villa D'Este. This luxurious villa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was commissioned by Cardinal d'Este in 1550. The fountains and water features, caves and statues make it one of the most popular examples of Italian-style gardens in the world. Inside, the rooms of the Palace display Mannerist decorations. As an alternative, if Villa d'Este is closed, visit of the ancient Villa Adriana, commissioned by Emperor Adriano. Drive to the region of Frascati, accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel Domus Caesari, or similar. Dinner and overnight stay

Day 6: OSTIA - ROMAN CASTLES

Breakfast at the hotel, and departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, guided tour of the ruins of Ostia Antica, an ancient port city dating back to the Roman Republic. This city’s destiny was cruel: a malaria epidemic devastated the city and put the inhabitants to flight. During the centuries this place was finally buried by the sands. Today this vast archaeological area evokes the commercial dynamism of antiquity through its fairly well-preserved ruins, including an amphitheatre, public baths, thermal baths and the square of Corporations. Free time for lunch by the sea (not included). In the afternoon, panoramic tour of the green region of the “Roman Castles" towards Frascati. From the outside you can admire the magnificent Gandolfo Castle, the Pope's residence overlooking the beautiful Lake Albano. Free time in the centre of Frascati. Back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 7: ORVIETO - BAGNOREGIO 

Breakfast at the hotel, and departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, road to Umbria. Stop in Orvieto, a town located at the top of a volcanic tuff massif. Ascent by funicular and guided tour (half-day) of the old centre of Orvieto, once one of the twelve Etruscan cities, whose remains can still be admired today. Visit of the Cathedral, the most imposing monument of the city for its dimensions and its facade decorated with mosaics and sculptures, then continue through the narrow streets of the village towards the Republic Square dominated by the Church of St. Andrew with its twelve-sided bell tower, and the People's Palace, a building in Romano-Gothic style (external views). Free time for lunch (not included) then descent by funicular. Departure for Bagnoregio, the dying city! Free discovery of the old centre with its eternal charm. The village is connected to the rest of the world by a long bridge (transfer by local shuttle bus included). In the late afternoon, back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 8: DEPARTURE

Breakfast at the hotel, then transfer by coach to Rome airport with our tour escort. Check-in assistance and end of our services.

The price includes:

• 7 nights accommodation on H/B basis in mentioned 4* hotels or similar, in double room

• All dinners excluding beverages

• Welcome drink on the day of arrival

• Lunch at Vatican Museums (day 4)

• The service of a professional English-speaking tour leader from/to the airport and for the whole duration of the tour, accommodation and meal costs included

• Local guided services as mentioned in the program

• The obligatory headset service for the Basilica of St. Peter

• 8 days transportation by air-conditioned G.T. bus according to the itinerary, including all city access fees as currently in force, and including meals and/or accommodation expenses necessary for the driver

• The funicular in Orvieto and the local shuttle bus in Bagnoregio

• VAT as currently in force 10% for hotels, 5% for maritime transport, 22% other services
