GENOA & THE ITALIAN RIVIERA

A brief but reach stay discovering the Riviera Ligure, from the famous “caruggi” lanes of Genoa to the wonderful colours of the villages of the Cinque Terre, Portofino and Rapallo.

DAILY PROGRAM

Day 1: GENOA

Arrival at Genoa airport, welcome by our English speaking tour leader and coach transfer to the city centre. Free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, guided tour of Genoa “the Superb”. Situated on the slopes of a mountainous setting, the great port city of the Ligurian coast has preserved an exceptional heritage of rich palaces, sumptuous churches and museums from the medieval period. Genoa is also a maze of small alleys called "caruggi", which lead to picturesque neighbourhoods where perfume and flavours mingle. Discovery of the main monuments and places of the city: the ancient maritime district of Boccadasse, the Ducal Palace, centre of the political power of the Maritime Republic of Genoa, the house of Christopher Columbus (external views). Visit of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, a beautiful Gothic building of Genoese style with asymmetrical towers, its Chapel of San Giovanni Battista, which preserves the ashes of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of the city, and then the Treasure of San Lorenzo, which contains the famous Sacro Catino, a cup of coloured blown glass emerald, often identified as the Holy Graal. Then, visit to the Prince’s Palace, an ancient 16th century stronghold and residence of Prince Andrea Doria. The frescoes decorating the vestibule, the Heroes' lodge and the Prince’s apartments were commissioned to a pupil of Raphael, Perin del Vaga. Outside, the villa is lined with beautiful Italian gardens. In the late afternoon, transfer to the outskirts of Genoa. Accommodation in a 4* hotel such as Hotel Columbus or Hotel AC Genova, or similar. Welcome drink. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: CINQUE TERRE

After breakfast, departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. Road to the Cinque Terre, a UNESCO-listed national park, known all over the world for its picturesque villages and wild coastline. Arrival in Manarola, walk downhill and guided visit of the small fishing village with its colourful houses, then walk to the harbor, and here departure by boat (alternative by train) to Vernazza, a trail along the coastline with a stunning panoramic view. Visit of Vernazza, one of the most picturesque places with its colourful tall houses, then continue by boat to Monterosso, the largest village of the Cinque Terre, where you will admire the “statue of the giant” leaning on the rocks of the beach of Nettuno. Free time for lunch (not included) and free time at leisure. Return by boat to La Spezia, bordering the entire coast, with stop and discovery of Portovenere, one of the most beautiful villages of Liguria, listed in the UNESCO heritage. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: RAPALLO

After breakfast, departure by coach for a daily excursion with our tour leader. In the morning, road to Rapallo, one of the most famous destinations of the Levante Riviera. Departure by scheduled boat to Portofino, the Saint-Tropez of Italy. Crossing by boat along the coast of the Gulf of Tigullio, touching Santa Margherita Ligure. Once in Portofino, guided visit of this beautiful place standing between sea and mountains. You will discover this ancient fishing village with its colourful little houses at the bottom of a suggestive cove. Walk through the narrow streets of the village up to the pretty piazzetta that descends towards the sea. At about noon, boat back to Rapallo. Free time for lunch (not included). In the afternoon, back to Genoa. In the prestigious Via Garibaldi you will discover the Strada Nuova Museum, a complex of three Palaces: Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Tursi, which houses rich art collections. Inside Palazzo Bianco you can admire the most important art gallery of the region, which brings together the works of the Genoese, Italian, Spanish and Flemish schools of the 16th century. The Palace Rosso houses remarkable portraits of Van Dyck. Finally, Palazzo Tursi houses the famous violin of Paganini, and the collection of coins, weights and measures of the Republic of Genoa. At the end of the day, back to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4: DEPARTURE

Breakfast at the hotel, then coach transfer to Genoa airport with our tour escort. Check-in assistance and end of our services.

The price includes:

 • 3 nights accommodation on H/B basis in mentioned 4* hotels or similar, in double room
• All dinners excluding beverages
• Welcome drink on the day of arrival
• The service of a professional English-speaking tour leader from/to the airport and for the whole duration of the tour, accommodation and meal costs included
• The transportation by air-conditioned G.T. bus according to the itinerary, including all city access fees as currently in force, and including meals and/or accommodation expenses necessary for the driver
• Boat crossings to the Cinque Terre, and Rapallo/Portofino/Rapallo, as indicated in the program
• VAT as currently in force 10% for hotels, 5% for maritime transport, 22% other services
